She was a sports reporter for some of the most prestigious outlets in the nation. She spent nearly a decade working for The Washington Post covering football and basketball as well as multiple Olympics as well as Grand Slam Tennis. Nichols began a nine year stint with ESPN which saw her win the two Emmy Awards, and featured on many of ESPN's top programs like NFL Countdown and SportsCenter. She was also part of the network's Monday Night Football broadcasts as a sideline reporter. She then moved to CNN and Turner Sports. The first show she created and hosted was her own show, Unguarded featuring Rachel Nichols, and aired regularly on CNN and CNN International. The show had over a billion viewers around the world. During this time Nichols covered TNT's NBA broadcasts including regular season, playoffs and the All-Star broadcast teams. She also reported for TBS reporting on golf and baseball broadcasts, and Final Four broadcasts on CBS. It was the only time in the award's 42-year-old record that a woman is nominated amongst the more than 200 candidates.
